Since its founding in 2004, has established itself as a key forum for formally and thematically ambitious documentary cinema. Held each spring in a selection of beloved Hamburg venues—including Metropolis, Lichtmess, B-Movie, and Gängeviertel—the five-day festival presents a diverse slate of regional, German, and international works. Curated without thematic or formal constraints, the program foregrounds films that expand the aesthetic and political possibilities of the documentary form, ranging from experimental, independently produced pieces to acclaimed international co-productions.
While the festival no longer includes a competitive section, it maintains a strong commitment to conversation and reflection. Filmmakers are regularly invited to present their work and engage with audiences in post-screening discussions. Recurring features of the festival include a retrospective, a focus on films connected to Hamburg under the label dokland hamburg, and the Positionen series—a discursive platform for debating current political and aesthetic trends in documentary film.
