Prerequisites

The replacement license plates can only be requested from the Landesbetrieb Verkehr (LBV) if the vehicle is registered in Hamburg. It must also have a valid general inspection.

Documents required

The following documents must be available to apply:

• a valid identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration
• the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
• the registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document)
• proof of the valid general inspection (HU)
• In case of loss, an affidavit is required. Please note the information under "Please note"!
• in case of theft, a theft report is required
• if applicable, the remaining license plate if only one has been lost
• the appointment confirmation

If an authorized representative submits the application on your behalf (only possible in the event of theft):

• the legibly completed power of attorney in the original with the legible color copy of the principal's ID card. Note: The color copy must be marked "COPY".
• the authorized representative's ID card in the original

Companies or associations must also submit the following documents:

• a company/association certificate (for example, an extract from the commercial register or an extract from the association register)
• the power of attorney with the legible color copy of the authorized representative's ID card according to the company/association register documents
• the authorized representative's ID card in the original

Please note

Affidavit in case of loss

As a rule, an affidavit will be required (for a fee). You must appear in person for this. Representation by proxy is not possible.

If the license plates have been stolen, a report must be submitted to the police.

appointment booking 
Appointments are booked through the LBV. Please proceed as follows:
1. Visit the website to book an appointment (see below) and under the service group Registration, select the service Application for new license plates after theft or loss. 
2. Use the location selection to display appointments at a specific location.
3. After selecting the location, use the calendar displayed to select a free appointment (date and time).
4. Now enter your name and email address for booking.
5. You will receive an email. Please confirm the appointment.

Please be sure to bring the appointment confirmation that you will receive afterwards with you to the appointment.

Fees

In addition to the chargeable purchase of license plates, fees of EUR 26.60 to EUR 70.00 are incurred for the issuance of replacement license plates. The exact amount of the fee can only be determined after reviewing the complete documents. In addition, there may be costs of EUR 30.70 for the insurance in lieu of oath. The basis for the fee level is the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
