Obtain a driving license (classes B and BE) for accompanied driving from the age of 17

Detailed description

If you participate in accompanied driving from 17, you are allowed to drive before your 18th birthday. This applies to classes B (car) and BE (car with trailer). After passing the driving test, you will receive a test certificate. This allows you to drive until your 18th birthday, accompanied by an authorized accompanying adult.

 

Information

Prerequisites

for applicants:

  • You are 17 years old or submit your application no earlier than 6 months before your 17th birthday.
  • You have your main residence in Hamburg
  • To obtain a driving license: You have completed driving license training and passed the driving test.
  • You have taken a first aid course.
  • You can name at least one suitable companion.

for accompanying persons:

  • You are at least 30 years old
  • You have held a class B driving licence (formerly class 3) for at least 5 years
  • At the time of application, you do not have more than one point in the driving aptitude register at the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg.

Documents required

  • Completed application for accompanied driving at 17 with signed consent form from the parent/guardian (see under “Links”)
  • a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with a current registration confirmation
  • Copies of the legal guardian's ID card
  • current biometric photograph (size 45x35mm, portrait format, frontal shot)
  • Proof of first aid training
  • Eye test certificate from an optician or certificate or report from an ophthalmologist (not older than 2 years at the time of application)
  • signed applications for participation as an accompanying person (each accompanying person needs a separate application) (see under “Links”)
  • Driving licenses of all accompanying persons (a copy of card driving licenses is sufficient, paper driving licenses must be presented as originals)

For the addition of additional accompanying persons:

  • Copies of driving licenses of all other accompanying persons
  • Copy of identity cards of all other accompanying persons
  • Test certificate of the BF17 participant
  • If the additional accompanying person is not a legal guardian of the driver's license holder: a power of attorney from a legal guardian for the driver's license holder
  • Appointment confirmation

Please note

If you drive without a registered adult before your 18th birthday, your license will be revoked. You'll also receive a fine, a point on your driving record, an extension of your probationary period, and be required to attend an advanced training course.

You can add additional companions at a later date. To do so, you must submit a fee-based application containing the specified documents and requirements for the companion. The application can be submitted by the additional companion or by the driver's license holder. To do so, book an appointment:

  • Visit the website of the State Transport Authority to book an appointment (see link below).
  • Select the category: Driving license
  • Then select: Change of driving license data
  • Follow the steps to reserve an appointment.
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reserved appointment using the link in the email.
  • You will receive an appointment confirmation. Please bring it with you to your appointment.

Deadlines

You can apply no earlier than 6 months before your 17th birthday.


The issued examination certificate BF 17 is valid for a maximum of 3 months after your 18th birthday.

Procedure

  • You register with a driving school and state that you would like to take part in accompanied driving from the age of 17.
  • You submit all necessary documents to the driving school.
  • Your driving school submits your application to the State Transport Authority.
  • You will receive your test certificate immediately after passing your driving test.
  • Once you turn 18, your EU driver's license card will be sent to you by registered mail. You only need to contact the State Transport Authority if you don't have your driver's license by the time you turn 18.

Processing time

The test certificate will be given to you by the examiner immediately after you have passed the driving test.


Additional accompanying persons can also be registered immediately.

Fees

Accompanied driving at 17 with an accompanying adult: EUR 61.90.


For each additional accompanying person: 8.80 EUR (card driving license) to 13.30 EUR (old paper driving license).


The fees for the theoretical and practical driving test must also be paid, but these are collected by the TÜV.


The fees are based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
