Detailed description

If you will soon no longer have a job, you must register as a job seeker. Registering as a job seeker is an important prerequisite for receiving support from the Employment Agency. By registering, you demonstrate that you will soon no longer have a job and are looking for a new one. The Employment Agency can then help you find a job.
You should register as a job seeker with the Employment Agency as early as possible if

  • You were terminated,
  • Your fixed-term employment contract expires,
  • You have concluded a termination agreement with your employer,
  • you are looking for work again after a long illness,
  • Your schooling, vocational training or studies are coming to an end and you do not yet have a contract for a job or training position in sight,
  • You want to return to work after a long period of raising children,
  • You are doing an external training course and are subsequently threatened with unemployment,
  • You are looking for work for other reasons.
 

Information

Prerequisites

After registration, you can work in an employment subject to insurance contributions for at least 15 hours per week.

When registering as a job seeker in person at the Employment Agency: identity card or passport and registration certificate

Deadlines

Register as a job seeker: At least 3 months before the end of your employment or external training contract.


If you only find out afterwards that your employment or training will end in less than 3 months, you must register as a job seeker with the Employment Agency within 3 days.

Procedure

You can register as a job seeker with the Federal Employment Agency online, in writing, by phone, or in person. Please note the specified deadlines. Subsequent consultation appointments can be arranged in person, by phone, or digitally.

In written form:

  • You send an informal letter to your responsible department of the employment agency or to the general address of the employment agency.
  • You provide your name and address as well as the date on which you will register as a job seeker or when your employment will end and that you wish to register as a job seeker.
  • The employment agency will then contact you to arrange a consultation appointment.

By phone:

  • You call the service hotline and say that you want to register as a job seeker.
  • The employment agency will then arrange a consultation appointment with you.

On-line:

  • You register on the employment agency portal.
  • There you choose that you want to register as a job seeker.
  • You fill in the specified fields.
  • The employment agency will then contact you to arrange a consultation appointment.

Personal:

  • You go to the relevant department of the employment agency and register there as looking for work.
  • If possible, you will receive a consultation immediately. If this isn't possible, you will be given an appointment.

Processing time

Usually several minutes, personal consultation on site usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. To be on the safe side, plan a little more time.
