Detailed description

"My ELSTER" is a personalized, barrier-free, and platform-independent access to the tax administration's electronic services. You must register once and free of charge.
If you use the online portal "My ELSTER," you can prepare and submit your tax return electronically. My ELSTER provides you with the appropriate forms for this purpose.
Use the instructions and help texts available in the portal or on the forms.
If you already have an ELSTER user account, for example, for your income tax, you can also use it for your property tax. You can also submit your family members' tax returns using your user account.
If you do not yet have an ELSTER user account, you must first register.
When registering with 鈥淢y ELSTER鈥�, a distinction is made between three options:

  • For a private individual (with tax identification number)
  • For an organization (with tax number)
  • Only with an email address to submit the tax registration questionnaire

Prerequisites

To use the online portal "My ELSTER" you need:

  • Internet access and a suitable device (computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone)
  • Registration with "My ELSTER"
  • Your tax identification number or tax number
  • ELSTER certificate for secure login (The certificate is created during registration.)
  • Current browser software that supports ELSTER (e.g. Chrome, Firefox or Edge)

You will need a card reader or an ID app if you want to use the electronic identity of your ID card for registration.

Please note

With the "pre-filled tax return," you can access previously saved data, such as your wage tax certificate, and insert it directly into your tax return. You can use this service via "My ELSTER" and third-party programs such as DATEV or WISO.

The "Elster Account Query" provides you with insight into your tax account, including outstanding amounts and payments made. It is available daily from 4:30 a.m. to midnight and displays the previous day's account balance. Tax advisors can also view their clients' accounts via the power of attorney database.

To query your tax account or use the power of attorney procedure, you need a registered user account with an organizational certificate. Registration is done via ElsterSecure, a security stick, or a signature card.

For business tax returns and returns by tax advisors, you need electronic authentication.

The usual statutory deadlines apply by which you must submit your tax return.


A certificate file is valid for three years. You will be notified of renewals several times in good time. If you miss the renewal date, you can request access renewal.

You can register with My ELSTER as follows:

There are five options available for registering with "My ELSTER":

  • Certificate file (on your computer)
  • ElsterSecure (on your mobile device)
  • New identity card (comfort access)
  • Security stick

As an employer, you should use the organization certificate associated with your tax number.

If you have registered with 鈥淢y ELSTER鈥� using 鈥淓lsterSecure鈥� or 鈥渃ertificate file鈥�, you will receive an email with an activation ID and a letter with an activation code.
Immediate access is possible when registering for private individuals by logging in using an identity card with activated online identification function or Nect (auto-identification procedure).

Without registration you can use the following products, for example:

  • ELSTER contact form: You can send a message to the responsible office and attach an attachment.
  • You can submit a questionnaire for tax registration.
  • einfachELSTER 鈥� You can submit your income tax return in a simplified manner 鈥� developed specifically for retirees. Other groups of people will also be able to use this service in the future.
