You can apply for a certificate of notification of a death.

Detailed description

If a person has died and all the necessary documents are not yet available, the registry office cannot register the death or issue a death certificate. In this case, you can request a certificate confirming that you have reported the death. Reporting the death is a prerequisite for the deceased's burial.

The registry office cannot yet certify the death because important data or documents are missing.

Documents required

  • Death certificate (medical document confirming the death of a person)
  • if applicable, proof of identity (identity card or passport) of the deceased person
  • Authorization of the undertaker

Procedure

  • You apply for a certificate of notification of the death and deferral of certification from the responsible authority. You can submit this application verbally or in writing.
  • The responsible authority will review your application and documents. If necessary, they will request additional documents or information from you.
  • The responsible body will decide on your application and issue you with a certificate if the examination is successful.
  • If you wish, the responsible registry office will send you the certificate by post.

The processing time depends on the individual case.

The cost of issuing a certificate of notification and deferral of notarization is EUR 28.00.
