Apply for care assistance

Care assistance is a need-based social benefit that you can receive to support yourself as a person in need of care who cannot cover the necessary care costs from your own resources.

Detailed description

You can receive care assistance from the social welfare agency if you cannot adequately cover the necessary care costs from your own resources. Reasons for your need for help may be physical, cognitive or psychological impairments or health-related problems that you cannot manage independently.
 
As a person in need of care at care level 1, the care assistance for you includes the following services:

  • approval of nursing aids
  • measures to improve the living environment
  • a relief amount
  • digital care applications and additional support in the use of digital care applications

As a person in need of care at care level 2, 3, 4 or 5, you can apply for the following benefits:

  • (partially) inpatient care
  • short-term care
  • a relief amount
  • home care in the form of
    • care allowance
    • home care assistance
    • respite care
    • nursing aids
    • measures to improve the living environment
    • digital care applications and additional support in the use of digital care applications.

You may be eligible for care assistance if you

  • are not insured for nursing care or
  • are not entitled to benefits from nursing care insurance, or
  • Care insurance benefits are not sufficient to cover your necessary care needs,
 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You are in need of care within the meaning of Section 61a SGB XII.
  • They cannot ensure the necessary care needs from their own financial resources.
  • Where applicable: Your spouse or life partner who is not separated from you, or your separated spouse or life partner, cannot be expected to raise the necessary funds from income and assets to cover your care needs.

Documents required

  • all identification documents
  • If available: residence permit
  • Evidence that justifies your need (e.g. medical certificate, proof of care level)
  • If available: severely disabled person's ID card
  • Proof of priority care benefits (nursing care insurance fund)
  • proof of economic need (welfare application)

If necessary, the responsible authority may request further documents from you (for example, proof of income or assets).

However, you can only receive care assistance once your need for care has been identified. You should therefore submit your application as early as possible - even if you do not yet have all the necessary documents.

Procedure

  • If necessary: You inform the responsible authority about your need for assistance. The responsible authority will then inform you about the possible next steps.
    • Since these social assistance benefits can only be granted to you from the point at which the responsible authority becomes aware of your need for assistance, you should report your need for assistance as soon as possible.
  • You submit your fully completed social assistance application to the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any missing documents or information from you.
  • Where appropriate, the competent authority shall involve other bodies in the procedure and, if necessary, obtain opinions.
  • The responsible authority will inform you of the decision on your application in writing.

Processing time

A decision will be made on the application as quickly as possible. The processing time depends, among other things, on the completeness of the information and the submission of the evidence required to process the application.
