Detailed description

If the name of the driver's license holder has changed, the driver's license should also be changed.
If there is a need to change the requirements, for example because visual aids are no longer required, a new driving license must be applied for.  

Information

Prerequisites

  • The application must be submitted in person.
  • Main residence is Hamburg.
  • A name change must already have been made in the identification document (identity card or passport), otherwise proof of the change must be presented (e.g. marriage certificate, certificate of name change).

Documents required

  • the current driver's license
  • a valid identity card or passport and, if available, the electronic residence permit,
  • 1 biometric passport photo 35 X 45 mm,
  • Index card copy - only required if no EU driving license card has been issued and the last driving license was not issued in Hamburg (see also link)
  • International driver's license, if available.

Additionally if you change your name:
  • the marriage certificate or the certificate of a change of name

Additionally when changing the driver's license requirements:
  • Documents proving that a condition is no longer required (e.g. a medical report).
An ophthalmological report according to Annex 6.2 FeV must be submitted for the deletion of a visual aid.

Please note

  • If there are changes to the driving licence, a new EU card driving licence is always issued
  • Validity of driving licenses
    The validity of driving licenses issued after January 19, 2013 is limited to 15 years, after which a new one must be issued. The driving license remains valid - no new test is required. Driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged by January 19, 2033 at the latest.

Procedure

The application is made on site. The new driving license is sent by registered mail by the LBV to the registered address of the applicant. Your invalidated driving license will no longer be recognized abroad from the time of invalidation.

Processing time


  • The total processing time is approximately 3-4 months.

    The production time at the Federal Printing Office is approximately three to four weeks. The driving license will be sent to you directly from the Federal Printing Office. Delivery will take place within three months.

Fees


  • The fees amount to EUR 43.20 and are based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).

Mon-Fri 7am-7pm, visits are only possible by appointment. You can book an appointment online (https://www.¼«ËÙʱʱ²Ê/go/17584) or by phone at 040 115.

The location will be closed on May 7, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you would like to apply for an identity card, passport or children's passport, you can use an existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) to capture the necessary biometric data (digital photo, signature, fingerprints).
Please allow a few minutes more time before your appointment to collect your data.
Note: You will not receive a printout of the digital photo.
There is no need to bring a passport photo with you when using the self-registration terminal.
Use costs 6 euros.
Please speak to the clerk afterwards.
Danger!
The existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) cannot be used for fishing licenses and driver's license applications. Please bring a passport photo (biometric) with you for these services.
